Grade 6 Program

Sixth Graders are in transition. As they begin Middle School, they are wrestling with much more complex school work and higher expectations. To help them, they need explicit instruction in life and study skills.

The Grade 6 program offers instruction in:

  • self-organization, including organization of one’s school bag, folders, homework, digital files, locker, school and home work spaces.

  • time management, including tips for overcoming procrastination

  • goal-setting for the short-term, medium-term and long-term

  • tracking progress toward goals and rewarding incremental “wins” along the way

  • effective and positive communication with teachers and other adults

  • self-advocacy, including asking for help when you need it

  • note-taking in class, including the Cornell Note-Taking system

  • annotating while reading, including the Thinking Jobs

  • studying for tests

  • outlining and writing essays

  • conducting research

  • preparing preparations

  • tips for public speaking

  • support with attentional difficulties

  • techniques for relaxing when stressed

  • techniques for staying motivated

  • growth mindset

The program also includes instruction on how the adolescent brain develops. This knowledge helps students to show themselves compassion and understanding, as well as also inviting them to stay positive, optimistic and purposeful through a period of rapid physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. The overall result is a calmer student who feels more in control and more motivated to work toward concrete goals.
